I grew up in Annapolis, MD, and attended Williams College, where I majored in math and political science. When I graduated in 1994, I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer for two years in Gabon, Central Africa, teaching math and ESL. It was a challenging position, not least because at 21 years old, I found it disconcerting that some of my students were older than I. (That no longer bothers me.)
After my service in the Peace Corps, I spent two years in Boston. The first year, I worked as an administrative assistant at the Pioneer Institute, a public policy research institution. The second year, I taught “Business Math” at the Katherine Gibbs School in Boston, served as a TA for “Multivariable Calculus” at the Harvard Extension School, and tutored math in the Boston area as I took classes in English literature to prepare for graduate school. In 1998, I started my Master’s Degree in English literature at the University of Virginia. After some movement among universities—too complicated to detail here—I graduated from the University of Virginia with a Ph.D. in English literature in 2007. In 2006, I began a job at Centre College as an Assistant Professor of English and Humanities, where I taught classes in British literature, Greek and Roman Civilization and first-year composition.
I’m now living in Acton, MA close to my family, and tutoring math, English, and test preparation in the surrounding area. I also earn money as a freelance writer and editor.
